He did a very good job!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had this conversation with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/balan-gurumoorthy-827955a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. B Gurumoorthy<\/a>\u00a0some 15 years ago (2008). I was a new student then at Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM), IISc Bangalore. In my widest dreams, I never imagined that I will get a chance to redesign the iconic logo!<\/p>\n<p>This month (January 2024), the department officially changed its name from \u2018Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing\u2019 (CPDM) to \u2018Department of Design and Manufacturing\u2019 (DM). A logo design contest was announced for the students and alumni by the department and I jumped at the opportunity!<\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;My Logo Design Submission&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h6|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722547608791{background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;26047&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722547870002 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><p>DM Logo, DM Monogram and DM full logotype versions<\/p>\n<p>The DM logo is bold, minimalist and is inspired by the CPDM logo that lasted 25 years!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Logo Animation Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/uRUhgumKJgk\">Animation for the \u2018Department of Design &amp; Manufacturing (IISc Bangalore)\u2019 logo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This animation video shows the transformation of the old CPDM logo to a new bolder DM logo. This video is created in Microsoft PowerPoint employing slide transitions like \u2018Morph\u2019 and object animations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>My Logo Design Process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just like most of the real-life design projects, the competition had a very tight deadline!\u00a0\u00a0Fortunately, I was able to come up with a very good idea in a short time. Now let\u2019s see how the DM logo came into fruition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Logo Design Brief<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The logo should reflect the DM vision of \u201cexcellence in design and manufacturing for a sustainable future\u201d. The logo should ideally connect with the CPDM old logo and branding. It is recommended that the old logo colors be used, with the addition of a third color, ideally associated with sustainability. However, the color palette is only a recommendation, and we are open to new color palettes if there is a good justification and association with the DM vision. In addition to the color palette, a choice of suitable font and typography is expected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 DM Logo Competition Requirements<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research and Ideation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the famous design schools in the world are using logos with very bold strokes and logotypes with heavy weights.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/design.mit.edu\/\">MIT MAD<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pratt.edu\/design\/\">Pratt Institute<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.design.cmu.edu\/\">Carnegie Mellon School of Design<\/a>\u2026 are examples. I started doodling digitally and played around the \u2018D\u2019 and \u2018M\u2019 alphabets. A couple of these ideas had the potential of becoming unique identities.<\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_single_image image=&#8221;26049&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722548083489{background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722548178668 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><p>Doodles of DM logo ideas<\/p>\n<p>In this stage, I was not much worried about the colors of the logo \u2014 hence the above doodles are in black and red colors similar to the original CPDM logo. After a \u2018highly unscientific user testing\u2019 with my family members and a few friends, I soon arrived at the present \u2018eye of imagination\u2019 concept.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Logo Inspirations<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_single_image image=&#8221;26050&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722548297104{background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722548351598 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><ul>\n<li>As stated earlier, the old CPDM logo is a huge inspiration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepik.com\/free-vector\/book-logo-template_47628546.htm\">\u2018FlyingBook\u2019 logo<\/a>, showing pages of a book morphing into imagination taking flight, influenced me and the alphabet \u2018M\u2019 in my logo is a nod to this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Cool_TV_logo_2004.svg\">old logo of \u2018Cool TV,\u2019<\/a>\u00a0a Hungarian television channel convinced me to use the negative space as the alphabet \u2018D.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>From a sustainability angle, one of the inspirations were a young plant or sapling with a couple of new green leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>[vc_single_image image=&#8221;26051&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722548490803{background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722548594825 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><p>A mock-up of DM signage<\/p>\n<p><strong>Logo Logic<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_single_image image=&#8221;26052&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722548681338{margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722548734239 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><ul>\n<li>The alphabet \u2018D\u2019 is residing mysteriously in the negative space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The alphabet \u2018M\u2019 resembles an open book or an idea taking flight. To ensure a good contrast on both light and dark backgrounds, a green hue of hex code #44bb33 is selected for the logo.<\/p>\n<p>In my submission for the competition, the logo had only two colors \u2014 green and black. The red, half-circle focal point on the current logo was of black color then. During the initial review of my logo by the judging panel, there was a unanimous request to incorporate the red color as well. This will help the new logo to show the lineage of the old logo. So I reworked the logo and now it features all the three colors\u2013 red, green and black. The red \u2018eye of imagination\u2019 has the hex color code of #ee2222.<\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_single_image image=&#8221;26055&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1722549203559{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;background-color: #474747 !important;}&#8221;]<div class=\" vc_custom_1722549253433 last-paragraph-no-margin\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><p>DM logo and DM monogram on dark and light backgrounds<\/p>\n<p>The linear version of the logo with full logotype has the words \u2018Indian Institute of Science\u2019 written in a grey color of hex code #666666.<\/p>\n<p>The typeface \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\/specimen\/Montserrat\">Montserrat<\/a>\u2018 is used with both \u2018Black\u2019 and \u2018Bold\u2019 weights for the logotype. The hex code of this light green is #cceecc.
