Abstract: The churn in higher education has been palpable for almost two decades, but events post 2019 have accelerated the debate so much that everything about higher education is under question, including the very existence of higher education institutions. In such uncertainty, how do you design a new university? In particular, how do you design a tech university that imparts relevant education when advances in technology are turning the world upside down at an alarming rate? The current chassis of university education, designed with the imperatives of World War II and its aftereffects, clearly needs a radical change. What should guide the design of the new chassis? We dig deeper to look at human needs, intricately coupled with planetary needs, for a radically new design of a university for the future. With a foundation built on time-invariant elements of education, and a super structure that is modular and easy to rearrange, we create a new university that should stand as a modern day Takshashila. In this talk, I share the blueprints, some glimpses of the look and feel, and the future left to the imagination of the audience, of the new design of a university for the future.

Title: (Re)Moving Boundaries: Deep Knowledge, Transdisciplinarity, and Design
Date, time & venue: 08 December 2023, 16:00-17:00 , MMCR, Department of Design and Manufacturing (Erstwhile CPDM)
Speaker: Professor Lucienne Blessing
Abstract: The issues society is facing consist of a large number of overlapping and interconnected problems. Addressing these requires an inquiry-driven rather than exclusively discipline-driven approach. Moving boundaries within one's disciplinary field is no longer sufficient. Industry and academia need to move or even remove the boundaries between fields. Multi- and interdisciplinarity only provide partially support. An approach that transcends the disciplines is required. The presentation will discuss the features, potential, and challenges of a transdisciplinary approach in research, practice, and education. Speaker: Jeng-Ywan Jeng Distinguished Professor of NTUST & Director of NTUST High-Speed 3D Printing Research Center. National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Taiwan
Abstract: High speed Additive manufacturing AM (AM2.0) will be presented in a scientific description in terms of energy applied and paern fabrication. AM has revolutionized the manufacturing industry by providing enormous design freedom. AM enables the manufacturability of complex structures, including topology-optimized structures, multi-material designs, functionally graded parts, and bio-inspired mesoscale lattice structures such as sea urchins, honeycombs, and trabecular cones. However, complex structural designs are process and material specific. Under these circumstances, the design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) tool is necessary to enhance the printability, by utilizing the capabilities and constraints of AM. DfAM enables efficient mass customization, material selection, weight reduction, and improvement in part performance. Read More

Researchers from ME & CPDM, IISc identify an alternative low-cost technique to produce metal powders for 3D printing
Dr Koushik Viswanathan, Assistant Professor, ME & faculty for manufacturing programme, CPDM, Mr Harish Singh Dhami (ME) and Mr Priti Ranjan Panda (CPDM) have identified an alternative low-cost technique for producing metal powders using 'surface grinding' for metal additive manufacturing (AM) applications. Metal powders for AM applications are commonly produced using atomization techniques, which are known to be expensive, capital intensive and highly inflexible. This approach of using 'surface grinding' to produce metal powders will have important implications for AM processes in general, including areas such as the manufacture of biomedical implants. The eulogy below is a tribute to Prof. Støren on behalf of CPDM, aptly written by Ms Surekha and Ms Maheshwari:
"Professor Sigurd Støren was a very humble academician and statesman. Despite his vast knowledge and great stature, he was very approachable, both inside and outside the classroom. He was ready to hear the simplest of questions and ideas. He was all about energy & enthusiasm and encouraged students to further their ideas into reality. He took the extra mile to facilitate the desired outcome. Professor Sigurd Støren was principled & a great Mentor. He believed every culture had a lot to offer for any situation and encouraged students from diverse backgrounds to apply the knowledge in their own manner. Above all, he was a warm and caring person, always with a pleasant and cheerful smile." Read More

Design of a biofidelic Prosthetic Arm is inherently complex as the natural arm has over 20
degrees of freedom for performing dextrous tasks. The mechanical complexity arises from the
need to grasp objects of varied size, shape, and weights; the complexity of control arises from
the need to use multiple motors and provide intuitive user interfaces for driving the motors. As
the level amputation increases, the number of motors necessary in the prosthesis increases;
but, the muscles from which the control signals can be obtained decreases. Consequently,
most available prostheses have limited capability, require extensive pre-usage training and
cause in-usage fatigue. This eventually leads to high rejection rate of even advanced
prostheses. There is a need to significantly improve the user interaction to enable highly
intuitive usage through minimization of active involvement of the user in the control of
individual motors. The aim of the proposed work is to develop a system to support autonomous
orientation of wrist of a trans-radial prosthetic arm, in the first stage. Subsequently attempt will
be made for autonomous movement of the elbow joint of a transhumeral prosthesis for
common tasks.
Prof. Sen is a faculty member at CPDM since 1998, when the department was
established. He has been engaged in product development predominantly in healthcare and
agriculture for the last two decades, apart from his scientific research in human factors,
kinematics, and computer-aided design. Four products developed under his supervision have
been granted Indian patent; 3 applications are patent-pending. His earlier work on a transradial prosthetic arm (patent-pending), PURAK, was funded by the Wellcome Trust (UK) for
developing it further to a commercial level product in collaboration with the University of Oxford
during 2014-2019. It resulted in the start-up Grasp Bionics (https://www.graspbionics.com/),
which is currently incubated in SID. Another product for hand-harvesting cotton also led to a
start-up, Sickle Innovations (https://sickle.in/ ), now a well-established company, noted for design intervention for improving conventional farming practices for small farmers.
Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) awards the Abdul Kalam Technology
Innovation National Fellowship. The Fellowship is instituted to recognize the importance of
translational research by individuals to achieve excellence in engineering, innovation, and
technology development in India. The focus is the realization of application potential, including
design and development of a deployable prototype or pilot-scale demonstration that could

James Dyson Design Award 2021 Posted on 06-09-2021 | | |
The LifeBox project at CPDM was recently declared the national winner of the James Dyson Design Award 2021. LifeBox is an active heart preservation container for extending out-of-body viable time during transport for transplant. This project is undertaken by Mr. Deval Karia under the guidance of Prof. B. Gurumoorthy, Prof. Ashitava Ghosal and Dr. Manish Arora from IISc in collaboration with clinicians Dr. K. Balakrishnan and Dr. Anitha from MGM Healthcare, Chennai. The project is financially supported by Design Innovation Centre, CPDM run by Prof. Gurumoorthy, and has also been awarded the PACE grant from BIRAC, DBT, GoI.
LifeBox is capable of extending preservation-time for the heart to allow for increased travel time and distances. It utilizes intermittent flushing of the heart with a preservation fluid to extend its out-of-body viable time. It has been designed to be portable, with corresponding innovations to overcome challenges of power and weight. Hypothermic temperatures (4 to 8 degree Celsius) are maintained using a novel patent-pending cooling system which uses a refrigerant, fans, and sensors for temperature regulation. This reduces the weight of the system by an order of magnitude as compared to traditional thermoelectric cooling methods. Additionally, the heart chamber is equipped with multiple sensors that continuously capture biomarker data, which serves as an indicator of heart health. This data allows the surgeon at the recipient site to take critical decisions, potentially leading to improved chances of success. Conceptually, the system can also be extended for preservation of other organs which rely on active flushing as a means of preservation.
The James Dyson Award is an international design award that encourages and inspires young design engineers who have the ability to develop tangible technologies that can change lives. This national award won by Mr. Deval and team is one among the 28 best inventions from over 2,000 entries across 28 countries and regions.

The challenges in availability of oxygen supplies in remote places and overwhelming situation raises in hospitals due to COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we have developed a low-cost oxygen concentrator system which was designed and fabricate using indigenous components. Generation and availability of oxygen source at point-of-care, where cylinders and other centrally distributed systems are unavailable is very important. Even if oxygen supplies are available at the hospitals, because of overcrowding as a result of pandemic situation will create stress on the system. In addition, not all patients require complete ventilator systems, some require just health vital monitoring and supply of oxygen at various percentages. Having a reliable oxygen supply is necessary for the care of these kinds of patients to improve the probability of survival during such a pandemic outbreak. In this talk, I will take you through the process of design, conceptualization, fabrication and product engineering of the system. Read More

Medical Oxygen is a life-saving support respiratory gas delivered to patients suffering from compromised respiratory systems. In events like the current CoVID pandemic, medical Oxygen has become a critical requirement, resulting in an unprecedented strain on the bottled Oxygen supply infrastructure. The situation is particularly critical in regions, mainly rural, that are located far from bottling plants. Towards catering to localized medical Oxygen requirements, the gasification group at the Indian Institute of Science, drawing from their expertise in developing low-pressure multi-specie gas separation systems, has developed an indigenous medical Oxygen generation system that uses ambient air to generate medical grade Oxygen. The process draws atmospheric air, which is passed through a train of cleaning, conditioning, and separation system to enhance the Oxygen concentration from about 21% in the feed gas to over 93% in the exit gas, the requirement for qualifying the gas as medical Oxygen. The unit continuously produces medical-grade Oxygen fulfilling the gas quality requirements as prescribed by Indian Pharmacopeia and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) for use in ICU/CCU/OT and other clinical wards. While there are commercial medical Oxygen generation systems available, the current configuration designed by the team at IISc has some unique advantages in terms of being modular and low cost both in terms of capital and operating expenditure. The plant has also been designed exclusively with made in India components except for the bed material. The plant in a footprint of about 1.5 meter X 2.5 meter delivers about 4 NM3 of medical-grade Oxygen with a typical power consumption of about 1.2 kWh/NM3. Read More

At present, the spread of COVID-19 is shown to have an exponential trend in most countries. An exponential curve is difficult for both comparison and prediction as it has a vertical asymptotic trend to infinity. We have developed a platform-independent web-based system that automatically divides the duration of spread of the disease based on rate of increase in new cases, and shows a set of graphs which are easier to interpret and extrapolate than a single exponential graph. The shape of the graphs (like linear, parabolic or exponential) can be compared at different stages with respect to the average number of new cases and deaths. The system can be used to compare the spread of the pandemic at country, state and district levels.
It may also be noted that the fatality rate for any natural calamity or pandemic is often higher in people with disabilities and a major cause is not having access to relevant information. We are working on developing a Covid 19 dashboard for people with disabilities. Instead of looking for a specific disability we took an inclusive approach of adding new modalities of interaction with a web based Covid 19 dashboard that can include a wider population than existing ones. The present version of the system supports hands-free interaction through eye tracking, automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech converter.

Recent advancement in Graphics Processing Units (GPU) made augmented and virtual reality systems commonplace and even available in low cost platforms. Augmented and Virtual reality systems have tremendous potential to re-shape our experience with digital media in terms of various degrees of immersion and interaction. Advancement in GPUs along with artificial intelligence also redefined interaction with electronic media in the form of eye gaze, gesture and body movement tracking in real-time with low cost imaging devices.
In the context of interactive AR/VR systems, this talk will present our research on integrating deep learning models with augmented and virtual reality environments for both traditional use cases of process modelling in smart manufacturing set up to novel applications of rehabilitation of people with disabilities, pilot training and enforcing social distance measures in office spaces. In particular, I shall present the continuum of displays, alternative input modalities like eye gaze tracking, gesture and speech recognition and basic theories of deep learning models like Convolutional Neural Networks. The integration of eye gaze tracking, gesture recognition and deep learning with AR/VR systems will be demonstrated through case studies from our three projects funded by Microsoft, Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and British Telecom (BT). Use of representations of the user for validation of designs is a common practice in the Industrial Design community. Use of the human-model in a computer aided design environment is also not new. However with the rapid advancements in information technology and computer hardware, human-in-loop simulations within the framework of PLM became affordable for faster development cycles. Digital Human Models (DHM) are computer representations which look, move and perform like 'real' users; designers observe, understand and infer the consequences of a given work scenario. Naturally, the scope of these inferences from these 'simulations' depends upon the sophistication of the DHM in terms of anthropometry, posturing, bio-mechanics, sensing, perception, skill, knowledge and cognition aspects of human-performance. Until recently, the development of DHM focussed primarily on 'visualization' for which the structure and animation were sufficient as the higher level inputs were directly available from the experts involved in the simulation. Realistic, responsive and cognitive human models started enabling task-level simulations from the traditional action level simulations of human performance. The webinar will give a glimpse of developments of DHM within the context of design and manufacturing. Read More

Industry 4.0 has shown a new paradigm where new technologies such as AI, cloud, predictive analytics, robotics, 4G/5G and IoT can support businesses in being more productive and efficient in a number of new ways, and even to the extent of changing businesses from those that just manufacture products to those that offer customer-focused services. This shift in business thinking from only producing goods to also offering an integrated package of goods and services is termed as "servitization of business", a concept first introduced in 1988 by Vandermerwe and Rada. Servitization provides an opportunity for the manufacturers to monitor the products they create through IOT based smart systems directly without having to wait for them to go through an intermediary such as the distributor or the retailer, adding further value to the customer. It is predicted that within the next few years, over 50% of field service personnel will be replaced by a two-way digital customer experience. Servitization is becoming a key to remaining competitive in the evolving business world while creating added value to the customers. In a large survey carried out across many companies in Europe by PA Consulting, 75% of organisations expected that delivering services would become a significant part of their business in the coming years.
This talk will explain briefly with examples how Servitization has an impact on every part of the manufacturing business by helping extend revenue flows, increase customer loyalty, and improve customer service, while controlling better use of materials and production processes to cut costs and inefficiencies.

The I3D lab of CPDM developed a video see through robotic interface that can be controlled through eye gaze and gesture. The system turned useful for a set of young adults with severe speech and motor impairment at the Vidyasagar, The Spastic Society of India at Chennai, who could use the system to manipulate physical objects themselves using their eye gaze. The I3D team used computer vision and machine learning algorithms to analyse live video feed of facial video and estimate where the user is looking at. The eye gaze estimation system is integrated to an Augmented Reality application that can manipulate a robotic arm for pick and drop task from anywhere within the robot's working envelop. The system is planned to be used for rehabilitation of users with disabilities by enabling them to make handicrafts independently. The eye gaze tracking system is also used for automotive and aviation application and the human robot interaction system has potential in developing collaborative robots for the smart manufacturing set up at CPDM.

Modern aircraft have electronic display systems that show information such as the plane's fuel level, imaging system or geographical position. Pilots can click the screen to the relevant page of information as needed, but this requires taking one hand either off the plane's throttle or control stick.
"When you are flying at different phases, you do not need all this information at the same," says Pradipta Biswas at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. He and his colleagues have devised an eye-tracking system that is embedded into a cockpit computer and that allows a pilot to choose the relevant display simply by looking at it and then confirming their selection by pressing a button on the control stick.
In a flight simulator, the system halved the amount of time it took to complete the action, says Biswas. Nine participants tested the system and completed a total of just under 600 look-and-select tasks.
The team has also devised a second eye-tracking system that is worn on a pilot's head and responds to their head and eye movements. The researchers tested the system in a simulator and tasked participants with focusing on a button at the centre of the simulated plane windscreen, which they could select by looking at it.
In a military setting, the head-mounted system could be used to automatically display information about a target in the distance if a pilot focuses their eyes on it, says Biswas.
Eye-tracking controls aren't currently in use in commercial aircraft, and the researchers first assessed whether they could accurately be implemented. They used commercially available eye-tracking glasses to follow the eye moments of three Indian Air Force pilots as each flew a transport aircraft and performed standard selection tasks. The average response time for each task was 2 seconds, just under half the time it usually takes without the glasses.
The researchers also tested how accurate eye tracking would be at different g-forces, as military planes can reach speeds that can result in g-forces several times the gravity on Earth's surface. A pilot flew a BAE Systems Hawk aircraft at forces of -1,1,3 and 5 g - the average person might pass out under forces of about 5 g. When pilots looked at a target, the eye-tracking devices were accurate to four degrees of the angle of vision around the target up to 3 g, but at 5 g the accuracy dropped, widening the area device tracked to 9.5 degrees around the target.

Hemang K. Jayant, PhD student from UTSAAH Lab, CPDM received best paper award in 7th International Conference on PLMSS (Product Life Cycle Modelling, Simulation and Synthesis), Bangalore from 18th-20th Dec 2019. He presented the paper titled "Electromagnetic induction heating of low melting-point non-magnetic metal for 3D printing". The authors of the paper are Hemang Jayant, Kishan Kumar and Dr. Manish Arora. The conference was organized by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
The paper is about scientific behaviour of a high frequency electromagnetic induction heater using a zero-voltage switching (ZVS) circuit for melting metal (solder-Sn63Pb37) which has a potential application in 3D metal printing. The experimental setup is instrumented for measuring temperature rise, alternating voltage, and current for controlling various crucial induction heating parameters. To demonstrate the application of 3D metal printing, tiny metal droplets were generated by gravity-driven flow of molten solder. Experimental results were compared with simulations and theoretical calculations. This approach holds promise for a desktop 3D printing of electronic devices.
This research work is funded by CEFC (Common Engineering Facility Centre), at IISc, under SAMARTH Udyog Initiative, and Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India. Read More
