Abstract: The advent of micro-, nano-, and molecularly-tailored multimaterial systems, particularly enabled by additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, allows for the development of advanced functionalities. Multimaterial and multifunctional 3D and 4D printing, rooted in diverse disciplines and inspired by decades of work on bulk microfiber heterogeneous composites, enable cost-effective automation and flexible local customization of material architecture and properties in three dimensions. This talk provides an overview of our cross-disciplinary research encompassing tailored multilayers, nature-inspired materials, nanocomposites, 4D printing, multiscale and multifunctional fiber composites and architected materials. Manipulating matter in 3D and 4D enhances performance and expands fabrication possibilities, promising unprecedented material classes optimized for specific applications in bio, defense, energy, automotive and aerospace industries.
