The Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM*) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) invites you to a DM-Industry Interaction session on Friday, the 11th of April, from 2.00-5.00 PM at IISc. Since DM’s research and teaching are closely tied to the industry, spanning diverse domains involved in design and manufacturing one way or the other, we invite our industry experts and stakeholders to join us for a candid discussion with the faculty and students of the department.
This is a fresh initiative from DM, even though we may have met some of you about specific activities in the department. The agenda of the event is as follows:
2.00-2.10: A welcome note by the Department Chair- Department history and legacy
2.10-2.40: About the research and teaching programmes- PhD, MDes, MTech
2.40-3.40: Q&A and open discussion
3.40-4.30: Coffee, tea and Networking with faculty and students (around student/ lab posters)
4.30-5.00: Closing discussion (way forward)
*About DM (in brief)
DM is the design and manufacturing face of IISc, which makes us one of the most industry- and practice-focused departments in IISc. DM faculty come from various disciplinary backgrounds covering the fields of
1) design and decision sciences;
2) mechanical and manufacturing;
3) electrical and electronics;
4) AI, informatics and computer science;
5) AR/VR, HCI, HMI and psychophysics;
6) haptics, biomedical and human-factors;
7) architecture, civil and construction; and
8) robotics and control systems.”
DM has more than 70 active doctoral researchers working across ten research labs spanning the aforesaid research areas. In addition, the DM flagship MDes programme focuses on Product Design Development and Management, training students to become product designers, product managers, product owners and product developers. These students are expected to work in the industry as system integrators, design engineers, and innovators, leading product development initiatives. DM also initiated an MTech in Smart Manufacturing, preparing students for advanced manufacturing skills and knowledge in AI, Industry 4.0, Additive Manufacturing, etc.
