The Satish Dhawan Visiting Professor/Scientist program is named ter Prof. Satish Dhawan, the former Director of IISc, and the chair of the Indian Space Commission. Under this scheme, visiting professors spend 1 to several months at IISc, deliver lectures, offer courses, work on collaborative projects, and interact with faculty members and students at IISc.
Prof. Blessing’s visiting professorship is hosted by the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM), IISc during which she will conduct a course on Design Theories and Methodologies, interact with the faculty & students of CPDM, and work together with the Chair of CPDM, Prof. Amaresh Chakrabarti on the further development of their DRM design research

Technology and Design; the University of Luxembourg; the University of the Greater Region; Berlin Technical University; Cambridge University, and the University of Twente. She was also chair of the Institutional Review Boards at both the University of Luxembourg and the Singapore University of Technology and Design. She has 38 years of university teaching experience largely in systematic product development, design science, and machine elements, and has facilitated Design Innovation workshops for public and private organizations. Her research areas include design processes and theories, design education, design science, user experience, transdisciplinarity, and ethics. Prof. Blessing co-founded the Design Society (www.designsociety.org) in the year 2000 and served on its Management Board and Advisory Board for a total of 16 years. She was a member of the Steering committee of the Council of Doctoral Education of the European University Association (CDE-EUA) from 2013-15, and member or chair of institutional review committees (research centres, university departments, including CPDM). She is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Design Science (Cambridge University Press) and the Design Research Foundations book series (Springer), and was Editor-in-Chief (Europe) of the Springer journal Research in Engineering Design from 1996-2009. She translated two editions of the book Engineering Design of Pahl and Beitz into English, together with Prof. Ken Wallace of Cambridge University, UK.
Prof. Blessing, together with Prof. Amaresh Chakrabarti developed DRM – the most widely used design research methodology. Together they trained over a thousand students in using DRM for their research (24 years in Europe as an international summer school for PhD students, and as Master and PhD courses at the universities where they worked). DRM is now taught by colleagues throughout the world. DRM was published as a Springer book in 2009, and sold thousands of copies, with 2726 citations till date (Google Scholar). Prof. Blessing has published 1 book, 2 edited books, 24 book chapters, 36 journal papers, and 179 peer-reviewed conference publications, given nearly 100 keynote presentations and invited lectures in 23 different countries, and participated in 3 patent applications. She acquired projects totalling over 10M Euro. The Stanford Uni List of 2021 placed her in the top 2% scientists in Design Practice and Management. Thus far 28 PhD students successfully defended their PhD thesis under her supervision and a further 4 under her co-supervision. Currently, 11 former PhD students hold positions as Assistant/Associate/Full professor at universities in different countries.
Prof. Blessing has an MSc in Industrial Design Engineering from Delft University of Technology, a PhD from University of Twente in the Netherlands. She received the “Young Lion” WDK award for “contributions to design science”, a Honorary Doctorate from Mälardalen University, Sweden, a Peabody Visiting Professorship at the MIT, a fellowship at the Design Society, and a membership of acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering.
