Komal Shah, an alumna of DM, IISc and ICMR Senior Research Fellow at DM, IISc won the GYTI Award 2023 under the “Appreciation” category for Ikshana: an integrated system for adaptive stimulation treatment of urinary incontinence.
Urinary incontinence affects 20% women in India and existing portable devices lack adaptability, leading to inefficacy, increased expenses and low patient compliance. Ikshana – the novel Adaptive Stimulation Treatment adapts electric parameters in real time to ensure maximum effectiveness for each patient, while sitting discreetly in an easy-to-use, portable pair of shorts. The aim of this product is to empower women by making it easy for them to take control of their pelvic health anytime anywhere.
The project started as part of Komal’s coursework at DM, IISc Bengaluru in 2019. She along with her co-founder Prof. Manish Arora, Associate Professor at DM, IISc intend to take the product to market through their startup Periwinkle Labs Pvt. Ltd.
Komal is an entrepreneur-in-residence at Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development, IISc Bangalore, and CEO and Co-founder of Periwinkle Labs Pvt. Ltd. After completing her graduate studies in the Master of Design (M.Des.) at DM, IISc, she joined UTSAAH Lab, IISc to work on an EPSRC funded project on the design and development of a Distributed Intelligent Ultrasound Imaging System for Secure in-community Diagnostics, in collaboration with multiple institutes including Cranfield University, UK.
The team has been recognized as international winners of the W2W Competition by IEEE Women in Engineering, USA, 2022 and winners of ASME ISHOW India 2024, among other recognitions. Some of the grants received by the team include BIG, from BIRAC India, and CSR support from Honeywell through FSID, IISc Bengaluru.
Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards celebrates the spirit of student innovation in all the fields of engineering, science, technology and design through extremely affordable/frugal solution or the ones pushing the technological edge.
